Each Dalai Lama is the reincarnation of the previous Dalai Lama. After the death of the Dalai Lama a search is conducted by High Lamas of the Gelugpa Tradition to find the child into which the previous Dalai Lama was reincarnated into. They use visions, signs, dreams and tradition to guide their search for the child. Candidate children are tested to see if their traits are similar to that of the previous Dalai Lama. The successful candidate is then declared the next Dali Lama and his family are taken and trained in Buddhist traditions and knowledge. Those visions gave him and his trustees clues onto who the next Dalai Lama will be. Eventually, those clues and sights led to the current Dalai Lama when he was a little kid.

Who was the ninth Dalai Lama?
The 9th Dalai Lama's religious name was Lungtok Gyatso. He died at only 9 years of age, and was the first of three Dalai Lamas to die before reaching 20. He was made the Dalai Lama in 1907 when he was just 1 year old. Thomas Manning, an English sinologist who was famous for being one of the first people to study Chinese culture in great depth, and was the first Englishman allowed to enter Lhasa, visited the 9th Dalai Lama in 1812, when he was 7. He said, 'The lama's beautiful and interesting face engrossed all my attention,' Manning wrote. 'He had the simple, unaffected manners of a well-educated princely child. As I understand it, since each Dalai Lama is believed to be the reincarnation of the previous Dalai Lama, as the current Dalai Lama gets older and feels death approaching, he takes some of his personal staff aside and gives them a general idea of where he intends to reincarnate next. These people then take some of his most personal possessions and set them aside after he dies. Then they go out and purchase similar items from local merchants. After 7 to 10 years, these items are brought to the area, and all the local boys between the ages of 7 and 10 are sent for. Whichever of the boys can correctly identify which of the items actually belonged to the now-deceased Dalai Lama (no room for error on this one) is taken to the palace for further testing, training, and a formal dedication. Interesting note: India has not been without a Dalai Lama for fifteen centuries.

After the death of the existing Dalai Lama the problem is to find where the reincarnation has occurred. This is usually expected to be in Tibet. The search is the responsibility of the High Lamas of the Gelugpa Tradition and the government of Tibet. It can take around two or three years (or more) to identify the new incarnation of the Dalai Lama. The High Lamas conduct several rituals to increase the odds of finding the reincarnation quickly. They look for omens and seek hintsin their dreams. They also devise tests for candidates they feel may be the reincarnation. Familiarity with the possessions of the previous Dalai Lama is considered the main sign of the reincarnation.
