Mark Twain called the late 19th century the "Gilded Age." By this, he meant that the period was glittering on the surface but corrupt underneath. In the popular view, the late 19th century was a period of greed and guile: of rapacious Robber Barons, unscrupulous speculators, and corporate buccaneers, of shady business.
The Middle Ages covers the period from the fall of the Roman Empire in the 5th Century AD, to the Renaissance period in the 16th Century.
Most of the 20th century.
The modernism era began in the late 19th century and extended through the early to mid-20th century, roughly from the 1890s to the 1940s. It was a period marked by a radical shift in artistic and cultural expression, characterized by a rejection of traditional forms and a focus on experimentation and innovation.
The period of modernism began in 1914 and ended in 1939.
