The shape of the county is due to the geographical features associated with the New River which meanders through a ridge at Narrows, VA, some 50 miles south of the New River Gorge, creating a northward notch along the border with West Virginia. In 1837, Giles County lost much of its territory west of the river to Mercer County (WV), which split off along with Monroe County (WV) to the east, in 1861. Giles County could potentially have moved to the new state formed in 1863, but did not.Virginia's oldest counties date to the 1730s but have been divided and re-divided over the years, such that all four counties from which Giles County was formed in 1806 were second- and third-generation entities.
