It was an important discovery because many times early frost would cripple the Canadian wheat crop. Marquis wheat took only 100 days to ripen and allowed the Northern areas of the prairies valuable land that could be used for farming. Also, by 1920, 90% of Canadian wheat grown was marquis. This made Canada one of the major wheat producing countries in the world and is widely believed by most historians in one of the most important events in Canadian history, so yes, I think it did matter in the grand scheme of Canadian economics.
