Chief Justice Edward Douglas White, Jr., was born in Thibodaux, Lafourche Parish, Louisiana in 1845.

President Grover Cleveland originally nominated White as an Associate Justice to the US Supreme Court in February 1894. President William H. Taft elevated White to Chief Justice in December 1910, to succeed Chief Justice Melville Fuller, who died in office. Chief Justice White presided over the Court until his own death in May 1921, when he was succeeded by Taft, the former President who appointed White Chief Justice.
