The Middle Kingdom (1975-1640 BCE) was founded by Mentuhotep II. During the Middle Kingdom upper and lower Egypt were united and Thebes became the capital city of the Pharaohs. During this period the Egyptians also developed block style artwork, they irrigated Faiyum, increased harvests and told stories through writing.

The Egyptians took control of Nubian trade around the early Middle Kingdom period, approximately during the 20th century BCE. This control was solidified as Egypt expanded its influence southward into Nubia, establishing trade routes and exploiting the region's rich resources, particularly gold. The Egyptians sought to secure these trade networks to enhance their economy and power. By the New Kingdom period, this control was even more pronounced, with military campaigns and the establishment of fortresses in Nubia.
As concerns the coloration of Egyptians in the Ancient Period, there is much controversy over this. Perhaps the clearest evidence that SOME Egyptians were black in the Ancient Period comes from paintings in Egyptian tombs and temples which show blacks as well as people of a Mediterranean coloration. There is also a minority opinion that Egyptians were predominantly black during the Ancient Period. However, most people believe that Egyptians during the Ancient Period resemble the modern Copts (who claim direct descendence from the Ancient Egyptians). It is notable that Egypt was conquered by Nubia/Kush which was a historically verified "Black" State.
During the New Kingdom period, the Egyptians sought to build an empire primarily for economic and military reasons. They aimed to secure access to valuable resources, such as gold, copper, and timber, as well as to expand trade routes. Additionally, military conquests allowed them to assert their dominance over neighboring regions, ensuring protection against invasions and fostering national pride. This expansion also facilitated the dissemination of Egyptian culture and influence across the ancient world.
