First of all, Indonesia was colonized by the Dutch ,or the Netherlands, as the Dutch East Indies. (Germany held the Northern Section of the Island know as New Guinea)The Portugese were the original European Discoverers of Indonesia (around 1512) not the Dutch. But, the Dutch colonized Indonesia in 1603 and held it until 1942.

It was valuable to them because the European countries claimed North America as their own in the early 1500s, and discovered North and Central America on accident while looking for a sea route to Indonesia.
