The European nations rivalries because they wanted to expand their empires colonially. This included all countries.
At various times, the Spanish, the British, the Dutch, the French, and the Portuguese all had empires in the New World.

Europe didn't need empires. However, because certain countries ruled over so much area, they were considered empires by history. Countries needed to have power over so much land in order to have a stronger influence over people and bring in more money into their empire.

They were both a part of European imperialism which altered the political, economic and social affairs of other countries.
