France controlled Algeria from the 1830s to the 1960s. Also, if you consider Turkey European, the Ottoman Empire controlled Algeria for much of the 1600s and 1700s.
England was the dominant European country in the early 1600s.
In the early 1600s, the Dutch settled in New York (I'm not sure why.), and after several years, the English took over.
