On September 2, 1945 Japan formally surrendered with the signing of the Japanese Instrument of Surrender.
The class leader, USS Iowa. The other Iowa class battleships are the USS Missouri (WWII was ended on her decks, the signing of the "instrument of surrender" on 02 September 1945); USS Wisconson; and the USS New Jersey (the only Vietnam Veteran battleship).
World War II began on September 1, 1939 and ended on September 2, 1945. It began with the German invasion of Poland and ended with the Japanese signing the "Japanese Instrument of Surrender"
Britain did not get out of WW2, as a member of the Allies, it won WW2 when on September 2, 1945, the signing of the Japanese surrender document brought WW2 to an end globally.
The announcement that Japan had accepted the Allied ultimatum came on August 15, 1945 (Japan time), and the documents of surrender were signed on September 2, 1945, aboard the battleship USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay.
They informally agreed to surrender on August 14, 1945. The formal signing of the surrender agreement was on September 2, 1945.

Six years almost to the day. The "official" beginning date is usually said to be September 1, 1939, when Germany invaded Poland. This ignores the fact that Japan had invaded China in 1937, and Manchuria in 1931. The end came in 1945, with Germany giving up in May, and the Japanese signing surrender documents aboard the US battleship Missouri September 2, 1945 in Tokyo Bay.
Basically, the only little war left remaining after Germany and Italy were defeated in Europe was the war in the Pacific. The US now diverted all its attention on the American forces in the Pacific. The end of World War II came when Japan finally surrendered aboard the USS Missouri (a battleship), signing the very documents that sealed their unconditional surrender after the second atomic bomb was dropped, causing the devastating loss of life. In a split second, thousands of Japanese lie dead. The Japanese knew nothing of this new weapon and had no choice to surrender, as stated by Emperor Hirihoto, who made the announcement over the radio (in which he rarely did make public announcements). When some Japanese heard this, they quietly committed suicide.
The Appomattox Court House in Virginia was the signing place of Lee's April 9, 1865 surrender. The surrender officially ended the Southern States attempt to concede from the Union.
The USS Jeffers was named after William N Jeffers. He commanded the Monitor after the captain was injured during the battle with the Merrimack. The ship had a long career. It was an escort to the Missouri as it entered Tokyo Bay for the signing of the Japanese surrender at the end of WWII.
