Plessy v. Ferguson (1896),
The U.S. Supreme Court ordered schools to gradually racially integrate.
The Brown vs Board of Education was a decision about school. The courts declared government could not provide "equal but separate" educations. Schools had to desegregate.
If a case goes before the Supreme Court the 14th can be used to make a decision about the new case. It was used in Brown v Board of Education, Roe v Wade, Bush v Gore, overruled Dred Scott v Sandford.
Two important cases were decided by the US Supreme Court in 1954: Brown v. Board of Education and the lesser known Bolling v. Sharpe in the District of Columbia. In both cases, segregation by race was found unconstitutional.
Attorney Thurgood Marshall led the civil rights case of Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka to a successful hearing at the Supreme Court of the United States in 1954. From 1965 to 1967, he was Solicitor General of the US, and in 1967 became the first African-American to be appointed a justice on the US Supreme Court.
