About the only campaign in the North Pacific was in the Aleutian Islands, part of Alaska, then still a US Territory and not yet a state. Lieutenant General Simon Bolivar Buckner, Jr. was commanding the Alaska Defense Command when the Japanese invaded and captured two of the Aleutian Islands, Attu and Kiska, as a diversion for their attack on Midway. Buckner also was in command when the islands were recaptured. The main force Buckner had was the US 7th Infantry Division, which at the time was under the command of Major General Eugene M. Landrum. Novelist James Jones, who wrote "From Here To Eternity" after the war served with the US 7th ID.
Buckner went on to command the US 10th Army at Okinawa. On June 18, 1945 he was killed by Japanese artillery fire. He was one of the two highest ranking Americans to die in the war, and the only one killed by the enemy.
Buckner was the son of Confederate General Simon Bolivar Buckner, Sr., best remembered today for surrendering Fort Donelson to U. S. Grant. This was the occasion when Grant earned the nickname "Unconditional Surrender" Grant, for the terms he offered his old friend Buckner. This was the first time the two had seen each other since they were stationed together in San Francisco before the Civil War, and Buckner loaned Grant the money (several hundred dollars - a substantial sum in those days) to get home on when Grant was forced to resign from the Army in disgrace for drunkenness. There is no record that Grant ever repaid Buckner, Sr. for the loan.

Since a large number of countries border the pacific ocean, it depends on which "pacific coast" you mean. The pacific coast of the USA is its west coast.
Eastern North America and Western Europe are separated by the Atlanic Ocean. Northern Europe and the northern part of North America are separated by the Arctic Ocean.
The west coast of North and South America is where the Pacific Ocean is located. So for the USA located on North America, the Pacific Ocean is on the US West Coast. If you are in Australia, the Pacific ocean is on the eastern coast.
