hydrochloric acid, HCl, because it can secrete digestive enzymes that help break down the food and it can sterilize your food as well. Sterilizing food may not be important anymore in modern day life because we can wash our hands, etc. but in earlier times when we ate grass, tree bark, animal meat, sterilizing food was very necessary for humans. HCl is a very strong acid and it does not burn through your stomach because there is a lining of mucus.
