Today, being disabled is not stigmatized the way it was in the 1930s. There are candidates with disabilities who have run for congress, and most voters only care about their views and their qualifications. Back in the 1930s, however, there were many stereotypes about disabilities. One involved being weak or frail. In the midst of a great Depression, President Roosevelt did not want people to think of him that way; he was afraid that if he was seen in a wheelchair, it would not project the image of strength he felt the country needed to see. Since attitudes have changed, people who want the statue to be historically accurate say there is no longer any shame in a person being in a wheelchair, so why hide the fact that President Roosevelt used one? They believe he should be portrayed as he really was in real life-- as a powerful and much-admired president who happened to have a physical disability.
FDR was a great president, which is why he served 3 terms (12 years) in the White House. This was due to the fact that we were in a war (WWII).While trying to resolve the issues overseas, he was diagnosed with polio. This paralyzed his legs, but with physical therapy and support from his family (four sons, one daughter, and his wife Eleanor) he regained some strength. He had many meetings with Winston Churchill and Joseph Stalin about how to strategize the war. Churchill, Stalin, and Roosevelt made up the leaders of the allies. The leaders of the countries that made up the axis were Adolf Hitler, Benito Mussolini and Hirohito. There is an interesting link on the philosophical parallels between FDR and Stalin, his ally, at the related link below.ACTUALLY HE STOOD AND SAID WE ARE NOT GOING TO FIGHTFDR was the US President .
President Roosevelt wanted support for the Great White Fleet to project US naval power and establish influence in the Pacific region. It was part of his broader strategy to assert the United States as a major world power and protect American interests abroad. By demonstrating American military strength through the fleet's global voyage, Roosevelt aimed to deter potential adversaries and secure favorable trade and diplomatic relations.
