Local police stations compile the information for the crime in their area. The state police help them and gather all of the information from around the state. Then the FBI collects all of the data from every state.

The Uniform Crime Reporting program, fills a need to develop a standard for reporting police statistics. This allows the government to classify and categorize the types of crime plaguing the nation, enabling strategy and solution. The program has both a federal level, which is administered by the FBI as well as state branches that also administer the program.
