There is only one species of tiger, Panthera Tigris, but six recognised subspecies, all of which are currently endangered.

The subspecies are: Bengal tiger, Panthera Tigris Tigris, population around 2300. Indo Chinese Tiger, Panthera Tigris Corbetti, population around 1300. Malayan Tiger, Panthera Tigris Jacksoni, population around 800. Siberian tiger, Panthera Tigris Altaica, population around 500. Sumatran Tiger, Panthera Tigris Sumatrae, population around 400. South China tiger, Panthera Tigris Amoyensis, less than ten in the wild, if they exist at all. China is pursuing a project to reintroduce captive born South China tigers back into the wild in their former haunts.
