Originally, the song 'Enjoy the Silence' was written by Martin Gore in 1990 and performed with his band collegues from Depeche Mode. The song has been covered since then numerous times by a number of different bands, and is one of the most famous songs by Depeche Mode.
I can't be absolutely certain as to what was the first Depeche Mode song was. However, when the band first began they produced a demo tape which contained three songs which were; Ice Machine, Radio News (an instrumental) and Photographic. I would put my money on Radio News as being the first Depeche Mode song. Their first hit record though was 'New Life'. A point of note; the lyrics were written by Paul Spector who was fourteen at the time and did not want to be credited with it and the cover designed by Vince Clark's brother Rodney Martin. I hope this was of some help to you.
80s pop! Period. They are certainly not reggae. Maybe a couple of hits are reggae influenced. They are not New Romantic and not Electro like Yazoo or Depeche mode.

They started with four in 1981, Vince Clarke, Dave Gahan, Andy Fletcher and Martin Gore. Then Vince left the band to be replaced with Alan Wilder shortly after their first album was released. Alan then left in 1995, which left three members of the band, which remains the case today.

Depeche Mode (pronounced /dɨˈpɛʃ/ də-pesh) is an English electronic music band formed in 1980 in Basildon, Essex. The group's original line-up consisted of Dave Gahan (lead vocals), Martin Gore (keyboards, guitar, vocals, chief songwriter after 1981), Andy Fletcher (keyboards) and Vince Clarke (keyboards, chief songwriter 1980-81). Vince Clarke left the band after the release of their 1981 debut album, Speak & Spell, and was replaced by Alan Wilder (keyboards, drums) with Gore taking over songwriting. Wilder left the band in 1995 and since then Gahan, Gore, and Fletcher have continued as a trio. -http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Depeche_Mode
