Lars Ulrich and James Hetfield are the only 2 original members since the start of Metallica in 1981.

Dave Mustain - lead guitar during the gigs between the metal massacre album and kill em' all.
Cliff Burton - bass guitar between the pre kill em' all gigs and the Damage inc. tour. (died during tour).
Kirk Hammett - lead guitar from the pre kill em' all gigs to present.
Jason Newsted - bass guitar between damage inc. tour and St. anger. (quit just before writing St.anger).
Rob Trujillo - bass guitar from Summer sanitarium tour to present.
(bob rock played bass for the St.anger album to fill in for jason but was not a member of Metallica).
