The "Sportsman" is the Model 58. It was made from 1956 - 1962 and was the first gas operated automatic that Remington made. It was replaced by the Model 1100 in 1963. A variation is the 878, that uses a similar gas system. the model 58 utilized a L/H gas control knob that was also the magazine tube cap. You used the 'L' setting for light loads and the 'H' setting for heavier loads. Both the 58 and 878 used an 870 barrel with gas ports drilled near the barrel band. They were three shot capacity.
