Chattanooga
On January 18th of 1862, the Confederacy lay claims to a disputed area in southern New Mexico. They renamed it the Territory of Arizona.
During the American Civil War, the secessionist states seceded from the Union at different times starting in December of 1860. Tennessee was the last Southern state to secede, doing so on June 8, 1861.
When US President Lincoln called for 75,000 volunteers to help end the Southern rebellion, four more Southern states joined the Confederacy. These were the states of Virginia, North Carolina, Arkansas and Tennessee. The Confederacy now was composed of eleven states.
After the surrender of Fort Sumter in April of 1861, President Lincoln called for 75,000 volunteers to serve for three months and end the Southern rebellion. After Lincoln's announcement, the southern slave states of Virginia, Arkansas, Tennessee and North Carolina joined the Confederacy.
The southern states were the Confederacy. All the states from Virginia down to Texas, Florida, Mississippi etc. were in the Confederacy.
It was tempting for many Kentuckians to join the Confederacy. It was a slave state with a long southern border with the Confederate state of Tennessee. Also, about one half of the legislature was in favor of the Confederacy. To make things worse, not a single county within Kentucky was won by Abraham Lincoln.

It was the Southern states that 'formed separately' by breaking away as the Confederacy. The North was what was left. They didn't call themselves the North. They called themselves the Union.
When 1862 is summarized, the Confederacy was seriously damaged. Despite some progress in the war, the South sustained more than 100,000 battle casualties. And, large pieces of Southern territory was lost to the Union.
The name of the city in Tennessee that had a major railroad center was Chattanooga. It was captured in September of 1863.
