President James Madison asked Congress to declare war on Great Britain in 1812 because Great Britain's navy and privateers were raiding American shipping at sea, stealing cargoes and taking American sailors and forcing them into British service. Great Britain had no respect for the United States because it was still fairly recent that they had won their independence. Madison knew this was a desperate measure but felt there was no other choice but to stand up to Great Britain this way.
Madison was stampeded by other politicians into launching an invasion meant to forcibly annex Canada, but that invasion failed badly on several fronts, and led to a British counter-invasion, which occupied large portions of American territory and famously burned the White House.
The peace deal known as the Treaty of Ghent was signed on December 24th, 1814, but in January, word of the peace had still no reached New Orleans, where American forces won a victory over the British.
But there was more to come. The British won the last victory, at the Battle of Fort Bowyer.
The Battle of New Orleans was fought after the British signed a peace agreement; news did not travel across the Atlantic very quickly in 1812, so it did not get to New Orleans in time to prevent the battle.
