Union forces won the Battle of Shiloh thanks to reinforcements from Grant and Buell's army. Their arrival turned the battle and forced the Confederates to retreat.

The letter "W" in relation to the Revolutionary War could stand for the Battle of White Plains. This battle took place in October 1776, where American forces under George Washington, faced off against British forces under General William Howe. The battle ended in an American retreat, but it helped delay the British advance towards New York City, giving the Continental Army time to regroup.
