The Battle of Sabine Crossroads-Pleasant Hill, where a Union Army led by General Nathaniel Banks was defeated by General Richard Taylor's Confederate Army. It was part of the last major campaign west of the Mississippi. It was fought on April 8-10, 1864 and saw the failure of the Federal attempt to capture Shreveport and deeply penetrate in the Trans-Mississippi going up the Red River.

The Wilderness was a battle, not a campaign. It was the first battle of the Overland Campaign (May 1864). Lee had won this battle, but Grant did not retreat. He hung on Lee's flank and eventually crowded him into a corner.
