A: The ancients did not use formal mathematical procedures as we do today, but they had invented numerology, which they thought to give numbers magical meaning through formulas we would recognise as like our mathematical equations. Examples in the Old Testament include the way the various ages of the biblical ancestors and patriarchs were arrived at. Most of the lifespans in the Genesis genealogies involve the

number 17, for example the Patriarchs:

  1. Abraham lived to 175 (5 X 5 X 7)
  2. Isaac lived to 180 (6 X 6 X 5)
  3. Jacob lived to 147 (7 X 7 X 3)

Here we can see:

  • Each lifespan involves a perfect square (5, 6, then 7 in a numeric series),
  • the third factor also forms a series (7, 5, 3)
  • in each case the sum of the factors is 17.

Joseph, favoured son of Jacob, is sometimes referred to as the fourth patriarch, and his 110 years are the sum of these consecutive square numbers (110 = 5x5 +6x6 + 7x7). Interestingly, the first man in Genesis, Adam, has a life span of 930 years, (= 30x30 + 30), and the last man in Genesis, Joseph, has a life span of 110 years (= 10x10 + 10). And Adam's lifespan can also be related to his immediate descendants by another series containing the number 17.

Genesis says Abraham's wife Sarah lived to 127 years, which is the sum of those consecutive square numbers plus 17, or (127 = 5x5 + 6x6 + 7x7 + 17).

Probably the best known place in The Bible that mathematics is used in the Bible is when God commanded Noah to build the ark. You have to be good in math to build a boat that large.

Genesis 6:15 (NKJV)

And this is how you shall make it: The length of the ark shall be three hundred cubits, its width fifty cubits, and its height thirty cubits.

What are the characteristics of biblical action?

If I understand you correctly, you are asking about how a person guides their life decisions by using the Bible. When you are faced with a dilemma and you are committed to using the Bible as a guide, you should first break your problem down into keywords. With your list of keywords you use a good Bible concordance to speed your search for verses pertaining to your problem. Read the verses. Read the chapter around those verses. You should then be able to perceive your problem from a Biblical perspective. If at this point you have trouble figuring a course of action, consult your church or synagogue. The characteristics of Biblical actions in this context would be: The problem is understood from a Biblical perspective and the solution is carried out in agreement with that Biblical perspective.

Compare and contrast equations and inequalities?

Inequalities and equations are both the same because they are both mathematical expression and they both use the same steps EXCEPT for the end. Inequalities and equations are both different because equations have an equal sign, the answer is not an interval, and the answer is a specific answer. Not a range. While inequalities don't have an equal sign, its answer is an interval, and it's answer is in a range.

Why is m the symbol used for slope in mathematical equations?

In linear equations, the multiple of the x-term dictates the gradient of the graph when plotted. Thus y=3x has a gradient (or slope) of 3. As it is the "multiple" of the x-term, "m" seems a sensible letter to use.
