The first main and most common is the mole. Gophers, snakes, lizards, rabbits, hares, many birds such as owls, and even bears (-but those are called dens-) dig underground dwellings. Oh - and humans, too!
Burrowing animals include moles, marsupial moles (which are quite different to moles), badgers, foxes, aardvarks, bilbies, wombats, echidnas, platypuses, planigales, rabbits, prairie dogs, gophers, groundhogs, antechinuses and dunnarts, just to name a few.
Rabbits, not hares, including most jackrabbits; some types of mice and even rats, like the kangaroo rat; burrowing owls, but their name gives it away; gophersdo, usually whole burrow systems; moles; chipmunks; ground squirrels; woodchucks, known as groundhog; some other birds like the kiwi, not the fruit; mongooses; prairie dogs; meerkats; porcupines; badgers; skunks; shrews; raccoons; weasels; worms and insects, like ants and some bees; some frogs do, and toads; even some reptiles like snakes.
It's mainly prey animals like rodents. But, as it says above, not just them. There are many others.
You could expect to find burrowing animals anywhere there is land. Animals burrow in dirt, mud, and in sandy areas.
