This is purely a matter of opinion, of course, but anyone who says it's something other than The Lord of the Rings is going to have to justify that claim.

LotR is epic High Fantasy. If you like Low Fantasy, or prefer something darker, some suggestions (a warning first that some of these are quite dark, and some are quite graphic):

  • The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant the Unbeliever by Stephen Donaldson
  • The Game of Thrones series by George R.R. Martin
  • [The] Dragon[something] [of Pern] by Anne McCafferey
  • The [Something][iad|oreon] by David Eddings (the 5 books of the Belgariad are probably the best)
  • Harry Potter and the [Something] of [Something] by J.K. Rowling
  • The [Something(s)] of Shannara by Terry Brooks
  • Anything by Terry Pratchett (fantasy with a strong humor element to it)
