This is because of the quality of the machines that they tend to produce as well as their "re-engineering" of the cartridges so that the only source available is Dell themselves.

What Dell does is modify the toner cartridge bay within their printers so that, even though the printer may be essentially the same as, say, a Lexmark model, one cannot buy the Lexmark cartridge and have it fit because of Dell's decision to change the design, thus making the standard cartridge incompatible.
