There is not a best one for all. It depends on your individual needs and your budget. We use an air purifier that suits our needs and we have been really pleased, it has really made a difference to the quality of sleep that we are getting- we are now waking up feeling more refreshed and less tired! The people who sold it to me have also been very helpful, which is nice these days!

There are many good air purifiers in the market. As a consumer these are few factors/ questions you need to ask yourself before you choose your air purifier :

1. What do you intend to use the air purifier for? For general air cleaning, health reasons, mold, pet dander,odor elimination,smoke etc.;

Depending on this you'll have to look online for air purifiers which are better suited/ can address or resolve your issue. There are few air purifiers which are very efficient in purifying the air from big contaminants whereas few others target smaller contaminants.

2. What is the coverage area you desire ?

Depending on the size of the room where you intend to place the air purifier take a look at the specifications of the model and check if the air purifier is designed for that coverage area. Sometimes you'll need more than one if you are using a small room air purifier in a big room.

3. Is noise a concern ?

This is something which consumers don't take into consideration initially. Most of the large air purifiers have powerful fans to draw in air and when they operate on high speed setting the noise can be more than white noise in the background and this can be a cause of concern if there is an infant in your home and sometimes if you intend to use it by your bedside you may have trouble getting a sound sleep.

4. HEPA type or Ionizer ?

These are the two popular type of air purifiers available in the market. If you are using the air purifier for health reasons then ionizers aren't a good option because they release ozone which is a lung irritant and traces of Formaldehyde which few studies link to cancer . So it is advisable to opt for HEPA air purifiers in most cases though they maybe a little bit more expensive but in the long run they are effective.

In addition to this there are air purifiers which use HEPA type e2f filters like this http://go-clair.com/ which can trap particulate matter upto 0.1 micron. This type of air purifiers are most efficient for people suffering from health problems since they can trap ultrafine particles,smoke and even few airborne virus. This type of air purifier has the most effective filter design.

5. What is the maintenance cost of the air purifier?

This is another factor which goes unnoticed. The filter of an air purifier needs to be replaced and this depends on the filter life which can range anywhere from a few months to upto a year. So if you buy an air purifier which is inexpensive but requires a new filter every few months then the replacement filter cost alone can add up to a big amount. In addition to this few large air purifiers consume a lot of power and since air purifiers have to be operated 24/7 this can lead to a spike in your electricity bill.

So opt for an air purifier which has low power consumption and has a filter which can atleast last for 12 months or more.

The best air purifier for your home will probably be coming from a company called IQAir. This is the company commissioned by the Hong Kong government to help them deal with the bird flu outbreak years ago.

But they are not cheap.

A cheaper, and more sensible options for most people will be one from Alen Corp (A US company) or Rabbit Air (a US & Japan collaboration)
