Labradors and Retrievers are both as appropriate for a 12 year old to train as each other. They are about as intelligent and willing as each other! Depending on where you live, how busy your life is and how much time you can devote to this dog, your dog can be only doing sit or he/she could be doing backflips! It is not the breed, it is all about what you want to do with it for instance, you wouldn't buy a Chihuahua to pull a sled instead of a Siberian Husky! I am a 12 year old and I have a Siberian Husky! He is less trainable than a Border Collie yet he can do more tricks than all the Border Collies I know (I know quite a few!)

If you want a smaller dog or hypoallergenic dog that has the same traits, just look for labradoodles. They have the same easy training and energetic traits but can be small/hypoallergenic.
