The monk Dionysius Exiguus in 525 CE set the year of birth of Jesus the Nazorean as being 525 years earlier by a miscalculation. It certainly wasn't that year - Matthew says it was in the reign of Herod (died 4 BC) which would mean it was about 6 BC; Luke puts the birth when Quirinius was governor of Syria which puts it after 6 AD. Take your pick.

To come to terms with a common dating system acceptable to the large majority of people in the world who are not Christian and wont accept a Before Christ (BC) and Year of the Lord (Anno Domino = AD), there is growing acceptance of the terms Before the Common Era (BCE) and Common Era (CE).

What calendar first divided dates into two categories BC and AD?

The Calendar designations are BC (before Christ) and AD (Anno Domini, which means 'the year of our lord'). The first use of this calendar method was 'invented', (designed), by Dionysius Exiguus approximately in 525 AD. The reason for this was to determine the correct date for Easter. He was directed to find the date by request of Pope St. John I.NOTE: in the Calendar's being used there is no year '0' there is 1 BC and then the next year is 1 AD.Recently academics (educators) have created other designations; BCE (Before Common Era) and CE (Common Era).
