Answer

It depends on the type of driving undertaken. Petrol Hybrids work well in hilly country and around the city, but it has been proven in real-world tests in this country (Australia) that small(ish) efficient diesels will outdo petrol hybrids in open road conditions ( of which there are many thousands of kilometres in this country) as at speed on a highway hybrids are at their least efficient. Brake regeneration, engine stop-start and other fuel-saving devices are appearing on diesel cars, too, making them even more efficient.

The totally electric car would be the most efficient. But as of now, the only commercial car that can use electric exclusively is the Chevy Volt and it will only get, at best , about 38 miles to a charge. But Unfortunately, it also has a gasoline engine that will get you about 300 miles so to say it is an all electric car is false.

I would like to add that as far as all of the "efficient cars out there today, I think the Toyota Prius is the most practical AND efficient. When the car is cruising at highway speeds, the electric motor is running the car. When the gasoline motor is running the car it is ALSO recharging the batteries for the electric engine. And the fact that it gets a healthy 40-50 mpg over all probably makes it the most efficient car today/
