Bhuyans of coastal orissa particularly in the districts of undivided cuttack and balasore are general in caste.kshaytriya/ khandayats. They used to be lancers in the erstwhile army of Gajapati kings of Odisha used to be conferred with landlord titles in the coastal odisha. However "Bhuian" and "pahdi/paudi bhuian" are STs or SCs depending upon the place they come from( hills or plains).
