Don"t know for sure. the term has nothing to do with Hotel-Motel management as in Waldorf-Astoria. It was coined by the philosopher Rudolph Steiner in reference to some educational scheme he had. Waldorf in German is an amalgam of Forest and village. It might suggest some sort of over-elaboration on what used to be called Nature Hikes a common practice in some schools on Arbor day, etc and logically Camps would fall in, no pun intended. The Back to Nature idea was implicit.

Statler and Waldorf. (Two hotels in New York) Waldorf's wife's name was Astoria. Waldorf was the shorter one with the mustache.
They are Waldorf and Statler. Statler is the longer-faced one which used to be voiced by Richard Hunt. Waldorf is the rounder-faced one, originally voiced by Jim Henson. An easy way to tell them apart is that Waldorf's wife, Astoria, is the Statler puppet in drag.
