Blood colour is due to the Hb (haemoglobin) in the red blood cells. So it is still correct to say that RBCs are the determinants of blood colour.

Hemoglobin
Hemoglobin is the part of a red blood cell that gives it the red color and carries oxygen. Hemoglobin is a protein that binds to oxygen in the lungs and releases it to tissues throughout the body.
Iron if it's a hemoglobin based blood cell (then the blood is red). If it's hemocyanin then it's copper and the blood will be blue. Like the people of Pandora.
The red color of red blood cells comes from hemoglobin, a protein that binds to oxygen and gives the cells their characteristic hue. Hemoglobin contains iron, which is responsible for the red coloration.

The red blood cell give it's color
It is of their different color blood cell.
The color of a red blood cell is dark red when it is deoxygenated.
Melanin is not the agent reponsible for coloring red blood cells. Melanin gives color to skin, parts of the eye, hair, the inner ear, the brain, and adrenal glands, though. The substance that makes the blood cells red is iron. It's actually a very pure form of 'rust'. Hemoglobin is also associated with red blood cell color.
The color of a red blood cell changes depending on whether its hemoglobin is carrying oxygen. Oxygenated red blood cells are brighter in color.
