Sam Houston appointed five Secretaries of State during his service to Texas. The first Secretary of State for Texas and appointed by Sam Houston was Stephen F. Austin. J. Pinckney Henderson was appointed the second and Robert A. Inion was Houston's third Secretary of State during his first term as the President of the Republic of Texas. Anson Jones was the Secretary of State during Houston's second term in office and went on to become the last President of the Republic. James Pinckney Henderson went on to become the first Governor of the US State of Texas and died while serving as a US Senator for Texas in 1858. E. W.
