The original 13 Colonies of British North America became the first 13 states of the United States of America by their signing of the Declaration of Independence of July 4th 1776 and going on to prosecute the War for Independence from Great Britain, the Revolutionary War (1775-1783). The first Flag Resolution dated June 14th 1777 reads "Resolved: that the flag of the United States be made of thirteen stripes, alternate red and white; that the union be thirteen stars, white in a blue field, representing a new Constellation." In 1818 Congress again reinforced the historical representation of the 13 stripes representing the first 13 states. The United States of America therefore was born out of the first 13 Colonies. The 13 alternating red and white stripes on our National flag pays tribute to those first 13 colonies that became the first 13 states, that fought for the birth of a new nation.

What do the stripes on a American flag represent?

Well, the 13 stripes represent the original 13 colinies of the U.S.A.. It used to be 1 stripe and star for each state, but with each new state that joined, another stripe and star had to be added. Eventually, there were so many stripes, it was decided that there would be only 13 stripes to honour the first 13 colonies and just a star for each state. I don't really know why the stripes are coloured white and red.

From 1795 to 1818, the US used a flag that had 15 stars and 15 stripes. It signified the original colonies and the addition of 2 new states, Vermont and Kentucky. The 15 stripes were for the 15 states in the USA at that time. On July 4, 1818, a new flag was created. It had 20 stars for 5 new states that were added to the US. This flag and all that have followed have had 13 stripes, representing the original 13 states.

What do the symbol in the american flag represent?

Originally there were 13 stars and 13 stripes, representing the 13 states. This increased to 15 stars and stripes, and was then changed to have one star for each state, but just 13 stripes for the original 13 states. Unverified accounts have George Washington saying that the stars represent the heavens, the red stripes represent England, and the white stars represent liberty, and the separation from England.

What does the lines on the American flag mean?

The stripes on the flag represent the 13 original colonies. I have not seen a specific designation for each stripe in sequence. Only that they as a group represent the original 13 as a group.
