The comet that broke apart in 2000 is known as Comet LINEAR (C/1999 S4). It was discovered by the Lincoln Near-Earth Asteroid Research (LINEAR) program and was observed to disintegrate in July 2000, creating a spectacular display of fragments. The breakup provided valuable insights into the composition and structure of comets.
Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 collided with Jupiter in July 1994 and was completely disintegrated during the impact. There are no remnants of the comet remaining, as it broke apart and its fragments were absorbed by Jupiter's atmosphere.
