Depends on how you define supercomputer:

  • IBM NORC was first computer deliberately designed to be much faster than other computers of the time.
  • Univac LARC was first computer specified to be much faster than other computers and first supercomputer built in more than one (2) unit. However neither LARC built was complete, they both had only one of planned dual CPUs. Its technology (surface barrier transistors) was already considered obsolete before the first one was delivered.
  • IBM 7030 STRETCH was first mass produced (9) supercomputer. However due to its poor performance compared to designed performance it was considered a failure.
  • CDC 6600 was first supercomputer on which a family of semi-compatible supercomputers were based.
