The Number 1 terminal
In 86 you they used either a 10si or 12si alt. regardless they are both wired and function the same, the terminal can go to the battery, on the plug you will find a red 10ga wire (located to your right ,holding tab up and the plug facing away from you) this wire can be hooked directly to the battery aswell. The other wire usually white 16/18 ga, is your voltage sensing wire and is hooked up through your ignition switch it then goes through a combination of a light and usually a resistor wired in parllel (used as a failsafe in case the light fails). This wire is used to excite the field to close the circuit turning the light off and start charging , with out the sensing wire with a light (as resistance) you end up with a hunk of copper and metal that does nothing.
