Both France and Spain provided aid to the Americans during the Revolutionary War. The French provided troops, their Navy, and loans, while the Spaniards provided loans. The French were the biggest help to the Americans; when Cornwallis surrendered at Yorktown in 1781, the French Navy was offshore blocking his retreat by sea, and French troops were engaged with Washington's Army on land. Both Spain and France supported the Americans in order to put pressure on their hated English rivals.
The French supplied soldiers, their Navy, and loans to the Americans during the Revolution, partly in response to the Marquis de Lafayette's belief in America's political and social ideals, and equally because supporting the Americans was an opportunity to put pressure on their hated English rivals.
