Sputnik 1 was the world's first Earth-orbiting artificial satellite. It was launched into a low altitude elliptical orbit by the Soviet Union on 4 October 1957, and was the first in a series of satellites collectively known as the Sputnik program.

Sputnik 1 was launched during the International Geophysical Year from Site No.1, at the 5th Tyuratam range, in Kazakh SSR (now the Baikonur Cosmodrome).

Russia launched the first satellite, Sputnik I, into space on October 4, 1957. It was about the size of a beach ball, 22.8 inches in diameter (58 cm). Russia also launched Sputnik 2, the second satellite into space, a month later which carried a dog named Laika in it.
