It is about evenly divided between France ( Creche), Germany and Austria ( Kripp,of Crib is the preferred term) and of course other Catholic lands such as Italy and Spain. Saint Francis of Assisi, old Nature-lover was much enamored of the Crib tradition. In Jersey City about , gleeps, 40 years back it was phased, out they used to have a Live-Animal creche at St. John"s parish, visible from Kennedy Boulevard, the Main Drag of Hudson County. I heard an accident involving the Mule, and possible complaints from the S P C A brought a halt to the practice, but it was popular and fun.
