ALS-Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis
Professor Stephen Hawking suffers from a degenerative motor neuron disease similar to ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease) which he has endured for about 50 years since the diagnosis. It has slowly progressed and weakened him; he is mostly paralyzed and is confined to a wheelchair, communicating by use of a synthetic voice generator.

Paralaysis
Hawking suffers from a rare early-onset, slow-progressing form of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as motor neuron disease or Lou Gehrig's disease.
Lou Gehrig's disease
Stephen Hawking received a diagnosis of a degenerative motor neuron disease similar to ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease) at age 21, which has slowly progressed and caused a near-total paralysis over a period of about five decades, causing him to be confined to a wheelchair.
In 1963, Hawking contracted motor neurone disease and was given two years to live.
Stephen Hawking did not have an accident. When he was in college he was diagnosed with motor neurone disease which led to his current condition.
