This was Simon the Zealot.

Zealots were a group in Judah who worked in secret to try to overthrow the Roman occupying government by various means - many of which were highly illegal or even violent.

Many think that terrorism is a modern invention, but the Zealots were revolutionaries bent on destroying the Romans wherever and whenever they could.

The presence of Simon as one of the disciples is a mark of Jesus' skill in seeing through an outer mask and finding the real person inside. If Jesus is able to recruit a sinner like a Zealot, a tax collector, humble fishermen and so on then this encourages ordinary people today to realise that God calls everyone - whatever their standing in society.
