Cortisol
The adrenal gland is primarily affected if adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) does not cause a normal elevation of cortisol secretion. ACTH stimulates the adrenal glands to produce cortisol, so a lack of cortisol elevation in response to ACTH may indicate dysfunction or disease affecting the adrenal glands themselves.

Addison's disease.
Addison's disease is associated with the lack of cortisol production from the adrenal cortex. The function of cortisol is in the sympathetic nervous system for long-term stress management and also on a daily basis to help the body adjust to daytime activities by helping raise dopamine levels and the conversion of stored sugar, glycogen, into blood glucose.
Cushing disease (or Cushing's syndrome) is when the body has too much of the hormone cortisol. A symptom of Cushing's disease is rapid weight gain. Removing the hormone gland that produces the excess cortisol can cure this disease.
Addison disease is a hormonal system disease that is caused by a dysfunction of the adrenal cortex glands, and involves the lack, or low amounts of certain hormones: cortisol, androgen, and aldosterone. It is mostly due to a lack of adequate amounts of cortisol and is often associated with bronzing of the skin.
The psychological disorder associated with low levels of cortisol is known as Addison's disease.
