The Duke of Medina, more completely "Don Alonso Pérez de Guzmán y de Zúñiga-Sotomayor, 7th Duke of Medina Sidonia" Unlike the late Marquis of Santa Cruz, the Duke had no seafaring experience, which may have contributed to the disastrous nature of the Armada's exploits.
He organised it and was one of the main financiers but the actual commander of the fleet was the Duke of Medina Sidonia.
