john Locke. Jefferson used his ideas for the Declaration . In 1776 the ideas of Locke was considered revolutionary. This was a world of kings with everyone else below the king, but Locke wrote that men were equal and had natural rights. He made the world flat compared to the pyramid that was created by kings with them on top. These were new ideas, new thinking that hadn't been done for a 1,000 years. We are use to these ideas today and cite them, but that hasn't always been true.
