An example of an event that places politics in the background for most people is the Summer and Winter Olympics. One historic example of this was the 1936 Summer Games in Berlin, Germany. Many people were appalled with the Hitler Dictatorship yet no boycotts interfered with the Games. Yes on two occasions the USA and USSR had a problem politically with the Games, but that was an aberration in the minds of many political scientists.
