The special powder extinguishers are designed specifically to fight combustible metal fires (class D), such as sodium, lithium, magnesium and aluminum when in the form of swarf or powder. The extinguishers are equipped with a special very low velocity applicator to ensure the fire fighting powder is applied efficiently and effectively to burning metal and prevent burning swarf from spreading. The L2 version contains powder formulated for extinguishing all metal fires including lithium.

* Unique lance applicator designed to allow the powder to fall evenly over the fire

* Colour coded area for easy identification

* Highly effective against metal fires. Which include lithium, sodium, magnesium and aluminum when in the form of powder or swarf

* L2 contains powder suitable for fires involving lithium

* M28 does not cover lithium fire risks

* Unique hose swivel joint for easy directional control

  • Lithium L2 Powder Extinguisher - 9kg capacity
  • M28 Powder Extinguisher - 9kg capacity

Name the product of the combustion of magnesium?

The "standard" answer is that if you burn magnesium in air, it will oxidize. The combustion product is magnesium oxide (MgO). But we're not done. It will also combine with nitrogen (air is about 79% nitrogen) to form magnesium nitride (Mg3N2), though it prefers to form the oxide. And yes, magnesium will burn in pure nitrogen. It will also burn in carbon dioxide (CO2) releasing carbon and forming the aforementioned magnesium oxide. Magnesium finds a lot of applications. Only steel and aluminum are more common. For instance, some automotive specialty wheels are fabricated of magnesium alloys (the "mag wheels" of the 60's). Magnesium is difficult to ignite when in the form of, say, a vehicle wheel. But the shavings or the powder can be lit more easily. When they burn, they do so with a brilliant white light. And burning magnesium is difficult to extinguish. Put water on it and it can explode, and it will burn more fiercely in any case. Dry powder or sand should be used to extinguish a magnesium fire. Use the link to one of many YouTube video shorts of a magnesium fire. This one features a firefighter applying water to a burning vehicle without knowing of a certainty what is actually involved. Surprise! Another link is provided to the Wikipedia article on magnesium. Be smart here. Don't be a jackass when conducting any investigations. Think them through and do your homework. The number of "experimenters" who end up in emergency rooms throughout the year is staggering. And some don't get there in one piece. Word to the wise.

What is the hardest fire to put out?

Fire requires three things: heat, fuel, and oxygen. Taking away any one of the three results in extinguishing the fire. Probably the fastest way would be to remove the oxygen. Halon and other similar systems work by instantaneously displacing normal air with a gas that does not support combustion.

Describe 3 different way of making hydrogen from other chemicals?

1. Put magnesium into an acid and as it disolves it will let of hydrogen gas. 2. Pass an electical current through water, this seperates the hydrogen and the oxygen from the H2o

Is potassium chloride the same as magnesium chloride?

No, not in any way. Potassium chloride is KCl and Magnesium chloride is MgCl2 KCl is used as fertilizers and MgCl2 is used as a highway anti-icer. The only thing they share is Cl in their compound.

How many bonds can magnesium chloride form?

Magnesium chloride is an ionic compound. Magnesium has 2 valence electrons, and chlorine has 7. According to the octet rule, each element will bond in such a way that it ends up having 8 electrons in its outer shell--either by adding electrons to its outer shell until it has 8, or by losing all the electrons in its outer shell (that way, the next-largest electron shell--which is already full--becomes the new outer shell). Since magnesium has 2 valence electrons, it will lose two electrons (it's easier to go 2 - 2 = 0 than to go 2 + 6 = 8). Chlorine has 7, so it will gain an electron and have a full (8-electron) outer shell. There must therefore be two chlorines for every magnesium: each chlorine accepts one of the two electrons donated by magnesium. Magnesium forms two ionic bonds: one to each chloride ion.

Can the metal Magnesium easily react with water at room temperature?

Magnesium does react with water at room temperature. It does however not catch fire as such. It is a "slow" reaction and does not self-ignite. It forms Magnesium Oxide and Hydrogen when it reacts with water. Larger (not that large) quantities of Magnesium on fire will not be put out by being submerged in water. Water can however put it out if one sprays it with water at high enough force. This will cool down the metal and it will not longer be able to sustain the fire. It will burn in an atmosphere of pure nitrogen unlike almost any other fires. Easiest way to put out a Magnesium fire is to cover it with sand or salt.
