Goldfish should only be kept with other goldfish. Other fish usually have different feeding requirements which can be difficult to meet, when the goldfish keeps eating all the food. Another factor is that most fish are tropical and need tank temperatures to be above 75 degrees F; goldfish are cold-water and prefer temperatures below 72 degrees F. Lastly, goldfish produce a lot of waste which, in an un-cycled aquarium, can prove quite deadly to other fish that have sensitive gills.

Ok. I'm going to tell you what I tell everyone. Goldfish SHOULD be kept with other goldfish, but there are some exceptions. Most peaceful plecos can live good with goldfish but you NEED to make sure your plec is well fed, otherwise it will learn that the slime coat on the goldfish tast good (gross, right?). Ottos can be kept with goldfish but they are schooling fish so you need at least 4 or 5 of em'. Snails do great with goldfish cuz they really don't need much. Ghost shrimp sometimes work if there are enough hiding places so they don't get eaten. Most fish ARE tropical and need temps between 72-80 degrees. Goldfish can live in very wide ranges of water temps but generally do best between 65-74. SO the best temp would be about 72-75 when you have tropical and freshwater mixed. Goldfish create lots of waste so you need a strong filter and weekly 20% water changes and monthly 50% water changes....So good luck!
